In this interview, we speak with Hadi Karaki about Formatif, a 100% offline, local-first desktop media processing suite. We discuss the project's journey to eliminate subscription fatigue and how it utilizes local hardware to empower independent creators.

What does Formatif do? And why is now the time for it to exist?

Formatif is a 100% offline, local-first desktop media processing suite built to eliminate subscription fatigue and cloud upload bottlenecks. It features Formatif Pro, which executes 59 native multi-threaded utilities for rapid video, audio, and batch image manipulation, alongside Formatif AI, which runs neural enhancement models entirely on local hardware via optimized ONNX runtimes. Now’s a good time for Formatif to exist because creators are increasingly frustrated by expensive, cloud-dependent SaaS subscriptions and demand powerful, privacy-respecting alternatives that leverage their own local hardware instead of taxing their wallets and internet bandwidth.

What is your traction to date? How many people does Formatif reach?

The project has just officially launched within the past month, so current active monthly reach is in its baseline organic growth stage. However, the addressable target market includes millions of independent content creators, video editors, and privacy-conscious developers globally who process gigabytes of media assets daily and look to bypass subscription gates.

Who does Formatif serve? What’s exciting about your users and customers?

Formatif is built for digital content creators, indie hackers, freelance video/audio editors, and privacy advocates who are experiencing severe subscription fatigue from SaaS utilities. It provides immediate value to anyone needing fast, secure, multi-threaded batch media manipulation without risking data leakage or encountering browser crashes from large files.

What technologies were used in the making of Formatif? And why did you choose ones most essential to your tech stack?

Formatif was built using a robust stack tailored for heavy, local-first media processing, relying heavily on Electron.js and Node.js for the native desktop environment. To deliver high-performance, multi-threaded media manipulation and local AI capabilities without the need for remote cloud servers, the platform natively integrates powerful tools like FFmpeg, Sharp, ImageMagick, and the ONNX Runtime directly into the user's operating system.

What excites you about Formatif's potential usefulness?

What excites me most is demonstrating that desktop software doesn't need to be an expensive, cloud-dependent SaaS subscription to be incredibly powerful. By processing heavy AI pipelines and extensive media manipulation workloads completely on native local hardware, Formatif restores full data privacy, entirely eliminates cloud latency/upload taxes, and gives creators an absolute buy-to-own utility suite that respects both their machine's performance and their wallet.
