In the first half of March 2026 I collected 95 events (6.34 events/day) with a threat landscape dominated by malware with 47%, (it was 42% in the second half of March), once ahead of account takeovers (up to 16% from 14%) and ransomware (down to 8% from 11%), which confirmed their positions.
As always, cyber crime led the motivations chart with 63%, nearly the same value of the previous timeline, when it was 62%; once again ahead of cyber espionage down at 16% from 21%. Hacktivism is back in the chart, fueled by the events in the Middle East, with 5%, whilst Cyber warfare closes the chart, with 3%, slightly down from the previous fortnight when it was 4%.
In this first half or March, the initial access techniques saw phishing on top with 14% (up from 10%), ahead of social engineering (13% down from 15%), and supply chain compromises plummeted at 9% from 19%.
And even in this timeline, targets belonging to the Information and Communication sector were the most hit with a share of 16%, (it was 13%), ahead of Public Administrations (slightly up at 14% from 13%). Targets belonging to the Fintech sector close the podium with 9%.
Besides these trends, as always the timeline is rich of interesting events, such as additional mega breaches , so my final suggestion does not change: browse the timeline for the details of all the events collected in this fortnight.
As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
