Law enforcement shuts down Cryptomixer in major crypto crime takedown

Authorities seized $29M in Bitcoin after takedown of Cryptomixer, a service used to launder cybercrime proceeds.

Europol announced the seizure of $29M in Bitcoin after shutting down Cryptomixer, a crypto-mixing service used for cybercrime and money laundering. The Europol reported that since its creation in 2016, Cryptomixer mixed over EUR 1.3 billion in Bitcoin.

The service has been targeted as part of an international law enforcement operation, code-named Operation Olympia, conducted by German and Swiss authorities from 24 to 28 November 2025, with support from Europol and Eurojust.

A mixer allows crooks to obscure transaction trails and launder illicit funds. Accessible on both the clear and dark web, the service pooled users’ deposits and returned untraceable coins, enabling anonymity. Although mixers can support privacy, Cryptomixer was largely abused for cybercrime and money laundering, leading to its takedown.

“Three servers were seized in Switzerland, along with the cryptomixer.io domain. The operation resulted in the confiscation of over 12 terabytes of data and more than EUR 25 million worth of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin.” reads the press release published by Europol. “After the illegal service was taken over and shut down, law enforcement placed a seizure banner on the website.”

In March 2023, Europol supported the takedown of the largest mixing service at that time, ‘Chipmixer’.

Investigators believe Cryptomixer laundered around 152,000 BTC, much of it tied to dark-web markets, ransomware groups, illegal goods, child exploitation material, and stolen crypto. Data from the Hydra takedown revealed transactions worth millions. Ransomware gangs including Zeppelin, SunCrypt, Mamba, Dharma, and LockBLockbitit used the service to wash ransom payments. Authorities are also probing whether assets stolen after a major crypto exchange’s 2022 collapse were laundered through the platform.
