Is coding compulsory for cybersecurity jobs?
The short answer is no. But it is a bit more complicated than that. Let us break it down together.
Cybersecurity Is a Broad Field
Cybersecurity is not one single job. It has many domains — defensive security, offensive security, GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance), and more. Each role requires a different skill set.
That is why the question of coding depends on which role you want to pursue.
Roles That Do Not Require Coding
Many cybersecurity jobs do not demand coding at all. For example:
- SOC Analysts
Your main responsibility is incident investigation. You use tools and software that others have already coded.
Your role is to: detect, investigate, and stop attacks, not to build the software.
- Threat Hunter
Your job is to detect hackers and stop them. You use programs that other people made, so you don’t need to know how to code.
